In our career journey, it’s easy to feel like you're going it alone, adapting to unexpected challenges, and hoping to reach your goals. But the most successful career paths are rarely navigated in isolation.
Countless professionals, from fresh analysts to seasoned experts, consider the "what next?" and "how do I get there?" questions throughout their career. Time and time again, the answer circles back to one powerful, transformative concept… mentorship.
This is a strategic imperative for anyone serious about their growth. Whether you're just starting to map out your career or you're a mid-career professional aiming for that next tier of leadership, mentorship provides a critical step in your journey.

Companies have boards of directors to provide diverse expertise, strategic oversight, and accountability. Why shouldn't your career benefit from the same kind of structure?
I wrote about this in my How to Cultivate A Network That Grows With You blog post, where I also have a free template to build your own, but here's a quick reminder.
Your “Personal Board of Directors” is comprised of 1-2 people in each of these categories:
The mentor is the most impactful in your long-term growth. The rest are important, but mentors’ lessons are most often the ones that we recall looking back in our careers. If a person can check the box of the Sponsor/Advocate + Mentor on your board, this is a highly potent combination. Just make sure you diversify with an additional person on one or the other in case things change.
The beauty of mentorship lies in its mutuality. It's a two-way street paved with growth, insight, and connection, benefiting both the mentor and the mentee in remarkable ways.
There are 3 key areas where mentoring is the most rewarding, which I’ll highlight below.
For the mentee, the advantages are clear. A mentor can break down complex concepts, share real-world scenarios, and provide tailored advice that accelerates your learning curve far beyond what any online course or textbook alone could offer. Mentors have walked the path, stumbled, learned, and can now provide shortcuts and warn of pitfalls. This is invaluable whether you're trying to master a new technical skill, understand the nuances of data storytelling, or develop your strategic thinking.
Mentors grow too. Explaining concepts to someone else forces you to clarify your own understanding, to articulate your knowledge. It keeps your skills sharp and often introduces you to new tools or approaches through your mentee's fresh perspective. Teaching is one of the most effective ways to learn.
You will likely learn completely new things as a mentor. I can’t begin to create an exhaustive list of all of the things that I learned because a mentee wanted to talk about it. I was clear with them when I was learning alongside them if I wasn’t an expert in that space and I found that this built a lot of trust with mentees.
Can you recall a time where a mentor helped you master something, or as a mentor, you saw a concept click for your mentee?
Imposter syndrome is incredibly common. Most of us have moments of doubt. A mentor acts as a crucial confidence booster. They see your potential, often before you fully recognize it yourself. Their encouragement, constructive feedback, and belief in your abilities can be the difference between staying stagnant or taking the first step. They help you identify your strengths and provide a safe space to work on your weaknesses.
Personally, I can recall a former mentor Shane Hermes believed in my leadership abilities before I saw any potential myself. I knew I wanted to grow into leadership, but I wasn’t sure how to get there or if I was ready. Shane helped me build the confidence needed and build a plan to take a temporary leadership role where I learned very quickly, started executing, and set new expectations for what could be accomplished in the role. It wasn’t long before I had a permanent leadership role, all because Shane saw the potential that I hadn’t built the confidence to act on.
For mentors, guiding someone else to success is incredibly rewarding. Witnessing your mentee flourish, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals provides a profound sense of fulfillment and reinforces your own expertise and leadership capabilities. It’s a powerful reminder of the impact you can have on others.
Your network is your net worth. Mentors can open doors you didn't even know existed. They can introduce you to influential people, recommend you for opportunities, and help you navigate the potentially unseen currents of your industry or organization. Building meaningful professional relationships can make the difference between a stagnant career and a swiftly-moving one.
Providing mentorship engages you with emerging talent and broadens your own network, connecting you with new generations of thinkers and future leaders. It keeps you tapped into evolving trends and can even lead to collaborations or hiring opportunities. Plus as I mentioned, they will inevitably teach you something new. Even if you are much further along in your career, there’s always something to be gained from hearing a fresh perspective.
